Tomas Aguirre Confident Ahead of His Clash with Yuzuki Satomi: “I Have a Stronger Mind and Heart Than Him” – K-1 WORLD MAX on February 9
February 4, 2025
On Sunday, February 9, at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium Second Arena in Tokyo, K-1 WORLD MAX 2025 will feature a K-1 Lightweight bout where Tomas Aguirre (Argentina/Dojo Serpiente) will face Yuzuki Satomi (Japan/Team NOVA). Ahead of the fight, Aguirre shared his thoughts in an interview.
Tomas Aguirre is a high-KO-rate finisher, and the reigning WGP Kickboxing Super Lightweight (-64.5kg) Champion. As a South American WGP Champion from Argentina, Aguirre made waves in January 2023 at GLORY RIVALS 5, where he engaged in an all-out war against Mexico’s Abraham Vidales.
His powerful left and right hooks, combined with devastating low kicks, make him a dangerous close-range fighter with an aggressive brawling style. In September 2024, he competed in the 7th K-1 WORLD GP Super Lightweight Championship Tournament, securing a first-round victory over Meng Gaofeng before losing a decision in the semifinals against Shu Inagaki. In November 2024, he bounced back with a decision win over Tatsuya Oiwa at Krush Nagoya.
Interview with Tomas Aguirre
– In the September 2024 7th K-1 WORLD GP Super Lightweight Championship Tournament, you won your first-round fight against Meng Gaofeng and then faced Shu Inagaki in the semifinals. Looking back, how do you feel about those fights?
“My first fight against Meng Gaofeng was a tough battle. He is a fantastic fighter from China. But I always fight aggressively, and in the second round, I was able to knock him down. That knockdown was the deciding factor in my victory.”
– In the semifinals, you lost a close decision to Inagaki.
“I think it was an exciting fight to watch. There was a lot of back-and-forth action, but I was counted for a slip, which may have influenced the judges’ decision a little.”
– In November, you fought Tatsuya Oiwa at Krush.
“It was a great fight. The first three rounds ended in a draw, but in the extension round, I was able to take control and win. It was an honor to fight a star fighter like him. I trained hard for that fight, and I believe my preparation was reflected in my performance.”
– That was definitely a hard-fought battle until the very end. What are your thoughts on your next opponent, Yuzuki Satomi, and what kind of fight do you expect?
“My next opponent is a former champion, so I know he’s strong. I’m honored to fight him in K-1. It will be an intense battle, but in the end, the one with the strongest heart will win.”
– You have competed at both 65kg and 62.5kg. Which weight class do you feel is your best?
“I can fight comfortably in both 62.5kg and 65kg! There’s no problem at all.”
– In this event, K-1 Super Lightweight (-65kg) champion Yodkhunpon will be defending his title. Can you share your thoughts on the championship?
“I think he is an exceptional fighter. He put on great performances in the tournament. I am fighting to earn my chance at the next title shot.”
– You are known for having a strong fighting spirit. What drives you to fight with such determination?
“My dream is what keeps me fighting. I have the desire to win every fight. Fighting in Japan is a dream come true for me. Since I was a child, I grew up watching K-1 fights in Japan. My next dream is to become a champion in Japan. I will keep fighting until I achieve that dream.”
– Where do you think you have the advantage over Satomi?
“My mind and heart are stronger than his. I am confident in my punching ability in close-range exchanges.”
– What kind of fight do you want to show Japanese fans?
“I want to show the fighting style of an Argentine fighter once again. I want to prove that I deserve a title shot. I want fans to witness violence and a strong determination to win. I hope everyone enjoys it.”
– What are your goals for 2025, and do you have a message for the Japanese fans?
“I want to thank the Japanese fans. Every time I’ve come to Japan, I have been treated very well. I also deeply respect how much Japanese fans appreciate this sport. That makes me very happy. My dream is to continue fighting in Japan for years to come.”
